Week of October 2-6

Reading
On Monday, we will have our Reading Common Assessment.  This test will cover all skills we have been working on this quarter.  The students can use their Reading ISN to review vocabulary, plot pyramid vocabulary, and what "needs" to be included in each section of the plot pyramid.  On Wednesday and Friday, we will introduce and study folktales.  We will explore through a book sort and look at different examples of the different types on folktales.  The students will complete several activities on these two days.  On Friday, they will have a short vocabulary test over the different types of folktales which will be in their ISN.

Homework
ALL students need to login into www.readworks.com; click on "I'm a student", click on "Log in with Google", they need to enter the code I gave them in class, then click on Conner section

Vocabulary homework read page 42, complete pages 43-45 due Friday


Writing
This week, students will be introduced to comma usage.  They will also practice applying what they learned.  Students will also start their final drafts of their personal narratives on Tuesday and finish them on Thursday.

Social Studies
This week, we will studying how governments are created, structured, maintained, and changed.  We will also learn about how geography influenced cultures around the world, what happens when cultures collide, and what issues the United States face today.  Students will complete Reading Notes and answer Reading Lab questions as we discuss these topics.  On Thursday, Students will be taking a district checkpoint test over concepts learned this quarter.

*Geography homework will be given on Tuesday and due on Thursday.

Week of September 25-29

Reading
This week, we will be working on Literary Text, Theme, Character Traits, and Setting.  We will be review these skills throughout the week by completing various activities.  We will have a Common Assessment next week over this semester's skills for a major grade.

Thank you to all the parents for purchasing the Vocabulary books we are using in our classrooms.  Last week, the students began to work independently at home on a few of the sections, and we are completing the others here at school. We will continue to do this weekly.  

We were so proud of our students for all the hard work in completing their Wax Museum project.  They looked fabulous all dressed up and sharing about their person.  A BIG thank you to all our parents who were able to come up and help our students create their tri-boards!!

Homework
Homework will be given Monday and due Friday. Plus the students will also read page 32 & 33 in Vocabulary book, draw pictures with their words 1-20 pgs. 34-36, and complete Choosing the Right Words pgs. 37 & 38 1-25 (Unit 3).

Nonfiction Reading and Writing
We will begin learning about Literary Nonfiction this week during our Nonfiction Reading and Writing time.   Students will be introduced to different literary nonfiction texts and compare them to their independent reading books.  In grammar and writing, students will be practicing using adverbs.  Students will also begin editing their personal narratives.  

Social Studies 
This week, we will start on our Celebrate Freedom and Citizenship unit. Students will be learning about the principles of government, how people gain citizenship, and how democratic societies balance the rights and responsibilities of individuals.  As we read and discuss these topics, students will complete topic reading notes.

Homework
Geography homework will be given on Tuesday and will be due on Thursday.

Week of September 18-22

Reading
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the students will be working on their tri-boards during our class time.  If you have not sent required supplies, please have them here at school by Monday, September 18th.  Our students will present their character to everyone on Thursday, September 21st in the Commons.  Your child should arrive by 6:15 dressed in their costume ready to present.  They have worked very hard and have put a lot of time into this project.  We are so proud of them!!

During the week, when your child is not working on their tri-board, they will be completing a few activities based on the book Wonder.  On Friday, they will be completing these activities as well as working on a project for their Reading Log. If they do not finish their project at school on Friday, September 22nd, they will take the project home to finish and turn in on Friday, September 29th for a major grade.

Homework
This week's homework will be a little different.  They will have a single sheet that they will use along with a website to complete.  They will also have a few sections of their Vocabulary book, Unit 2 to complete at home.  This will be announced in class.

Writing
This week in writing, we will be learning about adjectives.  We will also continue to draft our personal narratives.  We will be discussing how to use more colorful, descriptive words, and how to "Show not Tell" our stories. 


Social Studies
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students will be putting together their tri-boards for Wax Museum.  On Thursday, the kids will start on a Social Studies project that will count as a major grade.  Students will be creating their own continent based on a theme of their choice.  Students will map 5 major cities, various land forms, climate regions, natural resources, etc.  Students will be required to create a legend and compass rose.  We will work on this IN CLASS on Thursday 9/21 and Tuesday 9/26.  The project will be due at the end of class on Tuesday 9/26

Homework 
There will be no homework this week due to Wax Museum.

Week of September 11-15

Reading
This week, we will continue our district reading assessments.  One of our focuses this year is for our students to be able to use their independent reading book in class with daily assignments.  We will practice doing this with our students during our reading class.  All assignments will be completed in class.  

Wax Museum News
We will be working on our last two components for Wax Museum the next several weeks.  Please mark your calendar because the date has been changed to Thursday, September 21st @ 6:30, this will be our Wax Museum evening.

We will have tri-boards for sell for Wax Museum for $2.50.  Please send cash to purchase one for your child. Your child will also need many other items for their Wax Museum tri-board.  We have discussed with them how it should look and haven shown them an example of one as well.  Items needed: rubber cement glue, colored paper, decorative border, letters for character's name, stickers that relate to their person. 

If your child is new to our LC this year, they will have the option to participate with fewer assignments.  They will also have to complete a lot of the project at home.  If your child does want to participate, please email me as soon as possible.

Our first reading logs were given to the students on Tuesday, September 5th.  Since this is a shorter quarter, and we were out because of the storm, there will not be as many books required on this Reading Log.  There are five books on their handout, but they only have to complete three of them. They can use any book they have read from August 16th to present.  The Reading Log will be due on Friday, September 29th for a major grade.  

Writing 
In writing this week, we will continue to work on our personal narratives.  We will have many lessons on dialogue/quotations and how to write strong conclusions.  We will also introduce compound sentences and pronouns during our grammar mini lesson.


Social Studies
This week, we will be discussing Climate and Weather, World Climate Regions, and Natural Resources.  During our discussions, we will also explore the world's oceans.  Students will complete reading notes for each section we read.  Homework will be given on Tuesday, September 12th and be due on Thursday, September 14th.
